PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana remains India’s flagship push to put solar panels on residential rooftops, with the government subsidizing a meaningful share of installation cost so households can generate their own power and cut or eliminate their electricity bills.

Subsidy slabs: Households installing up to 2 kW systems receive ₹30,000 per kW. Systems between 2–3 kW receive an additional ₹18,000 per kW for the incremental capacity. Systems above 3 kW are capped at a total subsidy of ₹78,000, regardless of size beyond that point.

How it works: Homeowners register on the national portal, select an empanelled vendor, get the system installed and net-metered with the local DISCOM, and receive the subsidy directly into their bank account after commissioning — a Direct Benefit Transfer model designed to cut out middlemen delays.

Combined with net metering, a well-sized rooftop system can bring many urban households’ monthly electricity bills close to zero, while feeding surplus power back to the grid during peak sunlight hours.
