Battery Energy Storage Systems: Making Solar Power Available After Sunset

Solar power’s biggest structural limitation is timing — it’s generated only during daylight hours, while a large share of household and grid demand peaks in the evening. Battery Energy Storage Systems address this mismatch directly by storing surplus solar generation for use after the sun sets.

Grid-scale role: Utility-scale BESS installations are increasingly paired with large solar and wind projects in India to firm up otherwise variable renewable output, letting grid operators dispatch stored power during evening peak demand instead of relying on fossil-fuel peaker plants. Several recent large-scale renewable energy tenders in India now explicitly bundle storage capacity alongside generation capacity.

Behind-the-meter role: At the household and commercial level, battery storage paired with rooftop solar allows backup power during grid outages and can reduce reliance on net metering for evening consumption, though the added upfront cost of batteries means the payback calculation is more complex than for a solar-only system.

Where the technology is headed: Lithium-ion remains the dominant chemistry for now, but declining battery costs, improving cycle life, and growing domestic manufacturing interest are together expected to make storage a standard companion to solar rather than an optional add-on over the coming years.
