TOPCon vs PERC: Which Solar Cell Technology Wins in 2026?

Current market direction: TOPCon overtaking PERC as the dominant mainstream technology

For most of the last decade, PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) was the industry-standard solar cell technology, valued for offering a meaningful efficiency boost over older aluminum back-surface-field cells at manageable manufacturing cost. That is now changing.

TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) cells add a thin tunnel-oxide layer and a doped polysilicon layer on the cell’s rear surface, reducing electron recombination losses and pushing commercial module efficiencies higher than typical PERC panels. TOPCon panels also tend to have a lower temperature coefficient, meaning they lose less output as panel temperature rises on hot days — a meaningful advantage in much of India’s climate.

Manufacturing shift: Because TOPCon can be produced on largely similar production lines to PERC with incremental upgrades, manufacturers have been converting capacity quickly, and TOPCon has moved from a premium niche product to a mainstream option increasingly close to PERC on price.

What it means for buyers: A homeowner or developer comparing quotes today will increasingly see TOPCon offered at a modest premium over PERC. For roofs with limited space, the higher efficiency per square meter often justifies the extra cost; for larger installations where space isn’t constrained, PERC can still make financial sense, though its market share is expected to keep shrinking as TOPCon production scales further.
